My wife & I bought this laptop from Amazon on November 4 to replace a 10 year old Thinkpad & supplement another 2 year old SONY laptop we own. We are very pleased with the new laptop. It is attractive, easily portable despite its screen size, & appears to have been manufactured with high quality parts & standards, We use it primarily for internet search & email, & are pleased with its speed & ease of use. We have not found Windows 7 to be the great leap forward that most seem to believe, but that is probably because we don’t use many of its features……..We have rated the new laptop only 3 stars because we believe that many who buy a SONY [at a premium price] expect more in the way of after-the-sale service than they would from most other brands. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. Recently, our 2 year old SONY laptop suddenly developed wide white lines on its screen which made it unuseable. Although the warranty had expired, we thought it was reasonable to ask SONY if it would help with repairs, particularly after learning that other owners had experienced similar problems. After a series of exasperating & unproductive emails with SONY service, I finally wrote to SONY’s CEO. The employee who responded agreed to pay a portion of our $365 repair cost for a replacement screen installed by a local computer shop. That was more than a month ago. We have never received the payment, and our repeated followup inquiries by email, fax & phone have gone unanswered…….We decided to buy the new SONY laptop only after SONY agreed to share our repair costs on the old laptop. Needless to say, had we known that SONY would not follow through on its word, we would not have done so. I love this little laptop. I had actually bought an Asus Eee PC netbook (1.6 Ghz single core processor) and it just didn’t have the speed to do what I needed, so I bougth this Toshiba. I wanted something lightweight that I could take to school without weighing me down. I also needed a long battery life because many of my classes are 3 hours long. Unfortunately I also needed something with decent processing power, which the Asus netbook did not provide.
My last laptop was a Toshiba Satellite (3yrs old, running on 2.7 Ghz dual core processor and 3GB Ram) and I can’t tell a speed difference between this one and my old one. While it won’t be as fast as some of the bigger workhorse computers, it handles multitasking with ease and rarely any noticeable lag. This little PC is lightweight, I realisticly get about 7.5-8 hrs of battery life in the eco mode (I don’t know how they get the 9.5hr rating), and it’s got enough speed to handle the multitasking my graduate classes require.
I also plan to upgrade the ram, because I’m running 64bit windows and I’m a little geeky so I like the best specs possible (however it is fast enough for me as it is), and also buy an external optical drive/burner. The sound was low, but Toshiba’s website has an updated driver that improves that significantly, but I still wouldn’t buy this for the sound quality. The touchpad is sensitive when set at factory specifications, but you can turn off all the frills if they annoy you.

HP does not honor their warranty. After six months the screen failed and showed many lines and some black areas. This was just for normal operation of opening and closing the screen led. No force or pressure applied on the screen or lid to open and close. It is simply a poor quality design for expected operation. HP blames it on the customer and does not honor their product quality and reliability. After paying for replacement part plus labor, it will still be the same poor quality component. Failure as the result of poor design for durability is blamed as damaged by consumer (operator). I recommend Dell or Toshiba for much sturdier and well built design. Would you accept this on your car warranty if the door wouldn’t function and breaks after six months of normal use without any accident? HP expects the consumer pays for their poor development. Customer services were poor and at time insulting. I hope you don’t have to deal with them. Would you take this risk for your new purchase?
